Our chalk streams are one of the rarest habitats on Earth. Only around 200 are known to exist worldwide, and England is home to roughly 85 per cent of them. They are the jewel in the crown of our natural heritage, yet they remain dangerously under-protected.
Restoring and protecting our chalk streams is a matter of global importance. This briefing sets out the case to formally recognise chalk streams as a UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site, giving them the protection they deserve. UNESCO designation would recognise their outstanding universal value, strengthen long-term protection, and help mobilise investment and public engagement to support their recovery.
